The founding team
Yuval Kaminka, CEO and Visionary
Yuval Kaminka is co-founder and chief executive officer of JoyTunes. A science and computer whiz he was tapped by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for an elite computer program. Following his military service, Yuval spent almost three years as a research assistant while studying for his master’s degree in computer science at the Weizmann Institute of Science. After graduation he would move on to the world of high tech, working for such companies as WatchFire and ConicIT.
A visit with his seven-year old nephew while the youngster argued to keep playing Wii rather than practice his music would give light to the idea that is now JoyTunes. Yuval realized that like his nephew most kids drag their feet when it comes to learning and practicing how to play a musical instrument. But what if he could make it fun? So he developed the idea to create a game that would enhance the education and practice of music – using real instruments – through fun and engaging games. JoyTunes was founded in 2010.
Yuval is an avid fan of classical jazz and if he still played his saxophone, his fantasy band would include John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Byrd, and Thelonious Monk.
Roey Izkovsky, CTO and Tech Genius
As JoyTune’s CTO and resident tech genius, Roey Izkovsky is responsible for all the research, development and creation of the technology behind the educational games. He is a known and respected published mathematician, with a master’s degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science. He has also guest lectured at the Open University of Israel. Roey spent more than six years with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), where he headed up the research unit of an elite army intelligence unit. It was during his tenure with the IDF that he would meet Yuval Kaminka, and later join him and his brother Yigal, to co-found JoyTunes.
The only instrument Roey knows how to play is the keyboard attached to his MacBook Pro. However, it creates the magic behind the music, and as fans of Bach know, music is math – the perfect world for a mathematician.
Yigal Kaminka, Musical Soul
Yigal Kaminka is JoyTune’s resident musician and content director. The principal oboist at the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, he is an artist of great flexibility and maturity, equally at home with baroque oboe and recorder as with modern oboe. As principal oboe, he has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Heidelberg Symphoniker, West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the Philharmonie der Nationen, working under renowned conductors such as Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta.
Yigal has appeared as a soloist in concerts in Israel, Germany, Austria, and Spain, and has been successful in many competitions, including the prestigious ‘Aviv Competition 2009’, taking the first prize in all categories for oboe.
He believes that music transcends all and his love and passion for music led him to co-found JoyTunes with his brother Yuval. He’s the company’s musical soul.
